The Story
I tried everything. For years.
Both of my children started sucking their thumbs before six months old. By the time I found what actually worked, I had spent years watching them get sick constantly, noticing their teeth shifting, and feeling completely out of options.
Things I tried that did not work:
- Sticker charts and reward systems
- Bitter nail polish (they licked it off)
- Arm splints and zip ties at night
- Special treats and toys
- Constant reminders, dozens a day
- Telling them they were eating boogers and poop
- Reasoning, bargaining, pleading
- Everything Google suggested
None of it worked because all of it relied on abstract, future, or external consequences. Kids are not wired to self-regulate based on something they cannot see or feel right now.
What works is making the invisible visible. Showing them what is happening to their own body, right now, in a way they can see and understand.
I am not a child psychologist or a dentist. I am just an exhausted parent who found something that worked and is sharing it honestly.
